The Baby Signs® Program began more than twenty years ago when Kate Acredolo started inventing her own special signs to "talk" to her mom, Linda. Since then, Kate has grown and changed, and so has the Baby Signs® Program. Although Kate created her own first signs, the Baby Signs® Program is not about just "making it up as you go!" One of the biggest misconceptions about the Baby Signs® Program is the overly simplistic view that the signs are all made up and are therefore seen as exclusive of American Signs Language signs.
The Baby Signs® Program includes both ASL signs that are developmentally appropriate for young babies (we call them baby-friendly ASL signs) as well as ASL signs that have been modified to make them easier for little fingers.
Some babies do make up their own signs and some families create name signs for special people and pets. The Baby Signs® Program gives parents the freedom to use these signs if they wish. These signs can be very valuable in promoting communication.
The flexibility of the Baby Signs® Program ensures success for all parents, no matter what their goals. If their goal is to facilitate communication until their baby can talk, parents can use any of the signs listed in the Baby Signs® Dictionary. If the goal is to teach their child ASL to either facilitate communication with deaf friends and family members or as a second language, parents can choose to use the baby-friendly ASL signs and continue with more advanced ASL vocabulary as their babies grows.
Families who use the Baby Signs® Program know first hand that there are many benefits to using signs with their babies. For more information please e-mail me:
